ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My work is about ritual…the oneness of creating. It’s about color, interaction, and space. It’s about patience, time, and getting in touch with my inner spirit. It’s about memories, a fear of forgetting, and about continually discovering new ways to record those memories through visual expression.

My process consists of laminating many layers of colored handmade papers, which allows the viewer to go in and out of the pulp painting creating a feeling of becoming “one” with the image as I do when I am in the process of creating it.

After drying my paper painting, I then construct a collagraph plate to be printed onto the colorful story that is beginning to surface. Here is where texture and repeated pattern add detail to the composition. Collaged pieces of handmade and decorative Japanese papers are added to create motion and more detail.

I came to papermaking twenty-five years ago with a BFA in Graphic Design from Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, PA. After working for many years in packaging and corporate logo design, and various publishing projects, I returned to fine art in the area of printmaking for the next twelve years. Midway, I was introduced to papermaking after the International Paper Symposium was held in Kyoto, Japan, from which a fellow artist had returned to teach a series of papermaking courses in a local art center. I enrolled in her class.. I loved the process and what it did for me spiritually. I gradually merged the two mediums, which allowed me to continue to explore my fascination with design using texture, color, and repeated pattern.

I’m never really certain where my visual expressions are going to take me. I just know intuitively that we all have stories buried deep inside us, and that through the process of creating, my work takes on a mind of its own.
